Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile Dysfunction, or ED for short, happens when a man does not have the ability to keep a firm erection long enough to engage in sexual intercourse. While ED most commonly happens in older men, it is not rare for it to occur in men of any age. The problem of maintaining an erection can happen, on occasion, to all men, and this is most likely not a cause to be worried. However, if it happens on a regular basis, it can become an issue. This can not only inject stress into a relationship, but it will also affect a man’s self-confidence.

Erectile Dysfunction used to be known as impotence, and was a very taboo subject. As this is something that “attacks” a man’s feelings about himself, it was not a publically discussed topic. Doctors thought of it as a psychological problem, or simply a natural part of men getting older. Fortunately, these attitudes have improved over the years. It has now been documented that ED is caused by physical problems more often than by psychological ones. With the proper treatment and care, many men can have normal erections well into their 80’s.

In the past, most men would rather have suffered in silence than talk to their doctors about Erectile Dysfunction. Even in these more enlightened times, men still have problems bringing up this subject to their physicians. The embarrassment needs to be set aside if you truly want to receive the help you need to get back on track because there ARE options for you.
Treatments for ED range from medications to surgery. These have been shown to restore sexual function for most men who have tried these methods. However, the only way you will know if you are a candidate for any of these treatments is by talking with your doctor. You will need to be tested for any underlying causes such as diabetes or heart disease, as many times, Erectile Dysfunction can be a symptom of a more serious health issue. By locating the real problem, you have a much better chance of improving not only your sexual health, but your overall physical health.

If you are experiencing symptoms of Erectile Dysfunction, see your doctor as soon as possible. Have a full physical examination as well as an honest discussion about what can be done to help you. This is not the time to be embarrassed or ashamed. ED must be treated just like any other physical ailment so that you can obtain the treatment that you need.
